Baxter buys rights to emphysema treatmentDEERFIELD (AP) — Baxter International Inc. purchased exclusive commercial rights to an emphysema treatment from Kamada Ltd. in a deal that could be worth up to $45 million, the drug and medical device maker said Tuesday. Baxter, which is based in Deerfield, said it will make an upfront cash payment of $20 million for rights to Glassia, and additional payments of up to $25 million based on product sales royalties, a technology transfer and commercial milestones. The Food and Drug Administration approved Glassia in July. It is used to treat people with a hereditary condition that may result in early emphysema. Baxter said it expects to introduce Glassia in the United States in the fourth quarter and pursue distribution rights in other countries. It also purchased rights to the treatment in Australia, New Zealand and Canada. |
